On 01 April 1965, the local authorities of Edmonton, Enfield and Southgate were merged to create the London Borough of Enfield.

The Local Government Act of 1963 was introduced to reorganise and catch up with ever-growing modernisation both at home and globally. It was put into effect in 1965 and the Greater London Council was introduced to replace a fragmented and antiquated system of governance that had not been reviewed since the late 1800s. Many other systems and processes had been in place for hundreds of years.

This pop-up borough wide exhibition highlights just a few civic related objects from our collection, including a few 1960s gems, and has been co-curated by one of our work experience students – Anastasia Tusca.
